Naracoorte

Naracoorte is a rural small town in the southeast of South Australia and is located about 330 km from Adelaide on the Riddoch Highway ( A66 ) near the border with Victoria . It has 4888 inhabitants.

It is believed that the name of the city is derived from the local Aboriginal language and stands for either "place of flowing water" or "large waterhole". An existing disagreement about the exact meaning of the name goes back to the many spelling variants such as Narcoot , Nancoota or Nanna-coorta , which were common for the place.

history

Before the white colonization, Aborigines from the Meintangk tribe lived in this area, who opposed white colonization until the 1870s.

The first white settlement in this area dates back to 1842 when the pioneer George Ormerod settled there. Three years later, another settler, the wealthy Scottish immigrant William MacIntosh, decided to found a village which he named Kincraig after his place of birth. He opened a shop there and also opened a hotel to attract more settlers. However, the population only began to grow noticeably in the 1850s, after gold was discovered in neighboring Victoria and many miners came through the area.

From 1869 the place was officially called Narracoorte, although the current spelling had not yet emerged. Before that there were several different names for the village, including Kincraig, Narracoorte or Skyetown. A year later, the settlement was granted local status. At that time there were 900 inhabitants. The first newspaper appeared in 1875. Only after the railroad had reached Naracoorte in 1876 was a further slow, albeit steady, population growth ensured. In 1924 the village was finally granted local self-government.

economy

In earlier years, mainly sheep and cattle were raised in Naracoorte. Parallel to its decline, viticulture later developed as the region's new agricultural mainstay. The three wine-growing regions Coonawarra , Wrattonbully and Padthaway should be mentioned here , which also attract many visitors.

The tourism is another new economic resource of the area. It has been inspiring since 1994, at the latest, when the nearby Naracoorte Caves National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a World Heritage Site . The Bool Lagoon wetland , which is of great importance, also attracts many travelers.
