Sunderland FC

Josh Maja was born in the London borough of Lewisham and grew up in Pimlico . He played in the youth teams of Crystal Palace , Fulham FC and Manchester City before moving to the youth department of Sunderland AFC in March 2015 . On July 4, 2016, he signed his first professional three-year contract with the club from northern England. In the 2016/17 season he played for the first time in the Premier League 2 for the reserve team. On September 21, 2016, he made his debut in the 2-1 away win in the League Cup against Queens Park Rangers for the first team when he came on for Joel Asoro in the 69th minute . In the rest of the 2016/17 season he did not play any other competitive games for the men, which ended with relegation to the second highest English division . For the U23 he completed 26 missions in which he scored nine goals.

In November 2017 of the following season 2017/18 he was promoted to the first team by the new head coach Chris Coleman . At that time, the Blackcats were again in the relegation ranks, although they had aimed for promotion. On December 16, 2017 (22nd matchday), Maja made his league debut for Sunderland in the home game against Fulham, when he was exchanged for James Vaughan in the 72nd minute and scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win just five minutes later . As a result, he was used in another 16 league games, but he did not succeed in scoring and he rose with the club as bottom of the table in the third-rate EFL League One . The drastic failure of Sunderland was accompanied by a camera team for the Netflix series Sunderland 'Til I Die this season , with Maja also being accompanied in some sequences.

In the next 2018/19 season , Maja developed into a key player in the team. He scored his first goal of the season in the 2-1 home win against Charlton Athletic on matchday 1 (August 4, 2018) and he was also able to score in the next three league games. These achievements earned him a nomination for Player of the Month August, but Peterborough United's Jason Cummings was ultimately able to win. On September 22, 2018 (9th matchday), he scored his first brace in a 4-1 home win against AFC Rochdale . The entire first half of the season was accompanied by the media through the contract negotiations between Sunderland AFC and its consulting firm, which were initiated because his contract would have expired at the end of the season. The emerging interest of higher-class clubs from England and abroad prompted Maja to reject several contract offers from the Blackcats and ultimately prompted them to look for a buyer in the January transfer window.

Girondins Bordeaux

On January 26, 2019 Josh Maja moved to the French first division club Girondins Bordeaux , where he signed a 4-1 / 2-year contract. Until then, he had promoted Sunderland in 24 league games with 15 goals in the promotion race. He made his debut for the new club on February 17, 2019 (25th matchday) in a 2-1 home win against FC Toulouse . On April 20, 2019 (33rd matchday), he scored his first goal for the Girodins in the 2-1 away defeat against Nîmes Olympique , but was replaced at half-time with an injury. This knee injury prevented him from further appearances and he ended his first half in France with seven league appearances in which he scored once.

At the beginning of the following season 2019/20 he was regularly used as a substitute. On December 3, 2019 (16th matchday), he scored a hat trick in his second starting eleven in a 6-0 home win against Nîmes Olympique and prepared another goal from Nicolas de Préville . Despite this strong performance, he did not make the final leap into the starting line-up of head coach Paulo Sousa in the next league games and he ended the season with 21 league appearances in which he scored six goals.

National team

Josh Maja was eligible to play for both the English and Nigerian national football teams. In August 2019, Nigeria's head coach Gernot Rohr said that he would nominate Maja for the upcoming international matches in September. On September 10, 2019, Maja made his debut in a 2-2 draw in a friendly international match against Ukraine for the Super Eagles when he came on for Victor Osimhen in added time.
