Jed (John E. Davis' Emacs-like editor) is a free text editor under the GNU General Public License , which is mainly used on Unix / Linux systems, but also exists for other platforms such as BeOS , QNX or Windows . JED is primarily aimed at programmers working on the console and offers syntax highlighting for various programming languages such as C , Java or PHP .

Jed masters different operating modes (e.g. Emacs , WordStar ) and can be expanded with the S-Lang programming language .
