Joseph Vivien (* 1657 in Lyon ; † December 5, 1734 in Bonn ) was a French portraitist who stood out primarily through pastel painting .

Life

Born in Lyon, he was baptized on March 30, 1657. At the age of 20 he became a student of François Bonnemer (1638–1689) and Charles Le Brun in Paris . In 1698 he became a provisional member (French: agréé ) at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris, 1701 member and 1703 Conseiller.

Probably through the mediation of Agnes Le Louchier , he worked for the first time in Brussels for Elector Max Emanuel of Bavaria in 1699 . In 1704 he was in Brussels again, in 1706 and 1710 he stayed in Munich . From 1712 he lived again in Paris and after 1716 again in Munich. In the meantime he worked for the Electors of Cologne , first for Max Emanuel's brother Joseph Clemens and from 1721 in Münster for Clemens August , Max Emanuel's son. Hence his stays in Bonn in 1719 and 1734.

Create

Vivien is one of the most important pastel painters. A contemporary called it the " Van Dyck du siècle pour le pastel ". He was the second portraitist ever to specialize in pastel painting and thus received admission to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture . In Munich he carried the title of Premier peintre of the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel.

As a portraitist of the European nobility, he mostly worked in Paris and at the Wittelsbacher Höfe in Brussels, Bonn and Munich. In Munich he lived and worked alongside other court artists in the Herzog-Max-Burg .
