Mercadona SA is the largest supermarket chain in Spain , the headquarters are in Valencia .

The company sells groceries and everyday goods in the markets and on the Internet. The company is family-owned and has four company kindergartens.

Represented in all provinces of the country (with the exception of the cities of Ceuta and Melilla ) there are a total of 1,620 branches (as of August 2017) with an average of 1,300 square meters of retail space. Mercadona's market share in Spain is over 22%.

The roots of the company go back to the couple Francisco Roig Ballester (* 1912, † 2003) and Trinidad Alfonso Mocholí (* 1911, † 2006), who founded butcher shops from 1977, in which other foods were later sold.

In 1981 Juan Roig took over the business from their father with his wife and siblings Fernando, Trinidad and Amparo. At that time there were eight branches.

First Spanish company Mercadona early as 1982 bar code readers one. In 1988 the first warehouse was opened in Riba-roja de Túria and the Superette chain was taken over, which had 22 branches in Valencia. A year later, Cesta Distribución y Desarrollo de Centros Comerciales was incorporated into the company and thus a representation in the capital Madrid .

In 1992 Mercadona had 150 stores and employed around 10,000 people. With the acquisitions of Almacenes Paquer and Supermercados Vilaro in 1998, the company was also represented in Catalonia . In 2001 the first company kindergarten was opened in San Sadurní de Noya and the 500th branch in Linares . Five years later, the 1000th branch was opened in Calp .

The chain has had an online shop since 2001, which made up one percent of total sales in 2010. With a few exceptions, the prices of Mercadona are the same in all shops (also online). “Siempre precios bajos” (“Always low prices”) is the company's policy, which is why there are no price or gift promotions. House brands include: "Hacendado", "Bosque Verde", "Deliplus", "Compy".
