Juan Roig Alfonso (born October 8, 1949 in Valencia ) is a Spanish entrepreneur and president of the Mercadona supermarket chain .

Life

Roig was born in 1949 and went to a Jesuit school, then to boarding school and then to the University of Valencia , where he studied economics . His parents ran a chain of eight butcher shops ( Cárnicas Roig ) in La Pobla de Farnals , which were later converted into grocery stores. Juan Roig and three of his five brothers bought the shops from his parents in 1981. He paid off most of his brothers in 1991 and turned the stores into the Mercadona supermarket chain, which in 2016 had around 1,600 branches across Spain. The chain's secret of success is the cost-cutting way of working and a low-price strategy.

He met Hortensia Herrero at university and married her in 1973. They have four children together. In addition to his work as a businessman, he was a patron of the Valencia Basket Club .

capital

Forbes Magazine estimated his net worth at $ 3 billion for 2019, making him one of the richest people in Spain. This is the valued value of the 78% interest in Mercadona that he and his wife jointly own. However, since the shares in Mercadona are not publicly listed, the number is speculative.
