history
In 1935, the CIO (Congress of Industrial Organizations ) split from the AFL (American Federation of Labor) . In 1955 the two reunited to form the AFL-CIO.
Until 2005 it practically worked as a central umbrella organization. Internal disagreements led to numerous unions (including the service union SEIU, the largest single union) resigning in July / August 2005 and forming under a new umbrella organization “ Change to Win ”.
