Seafarers International Union of North America

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seafarers International Union (SIU) is the umbrella organization of twelve autonomous unions of seafarers, fishermen and boaters who work on ships sailing under the US or Canadian flag. The union has over 35,000 members and is the largest maritime union in the United States . Headquarters is Camp Springs, Maryland.

history

The SIU was founded on October 14, 1938, during the turbulent times of the Great Depression and the global growth of the Communist movements . SIU's roots go back to 1892 when delegates from trade unions from the West Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico met at a seaman's conference in Chicago . The conference was probably the decisive factor in the merger of the sea unions, which was later founded as the "International Seamen's Union (ISU)" as a member union of the American Federation of Labor (AFL).
Michael Sacco has been the union's president since 1988.
