Luis Díaz (painter)

Luis Díaz (born December 5, 1939 in Guatemala City ) is a Guatemalan painter, printmaker, sculptor and architect.

Díaz studied architecture at the Universidad de San Carlos from 1959 to 1961 , but was still largely self-taught as an artist. He is one of the most important abstract artists in Guatemala, who prefers to work with geometric shapes and unusual materials. As an architect, he is represented with two prominent buildings in Guatemala City, the Edificio de Recursos Educativos , the library building of the Universidad de San Carlos, a joint project with Augusto de León Fajardo (1969) and the Instituto de Fomento Municipal (1973). As a consultant he was involved in the planning of the campuses of the Universidad de San Carlos, the Universidad Rafael Landívar , the Plaza del Sol , the Edificio Médico Obelisco , the Edificio del Banco Industrial and the Club Campestre La Montana .

There are also several murals by Díaz in Guatemala City, including Genesis on the house of the architect Max Holzheu , Nest of Quetzals at the Instituto de Fomento Municipal, an untitled work at the Caméra Guatemalteca de la Construcción and Quetzal on the Banco de Quetzal building . He participated in art biennials in Paris and Santiago (1965), São Paulo (1971), Venice (1972), Seville (1986) and Mexico (1990) and received awards in Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, the USA and Mexico. With the Galeria MS he founded the first commercial gallery in Guatemala, which is dedicated to modern art. Works by Díaz can be found among others. a. in the collection of the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno "Carlos Mérida" .
