Karl Christoph Schmieder (born December 5, 1778 in Eisleben , † October 23, 1850 in Kassel ) was a German science historian , high school professor and author .

Karl Schmieder received his doctorate in philosophy , completed his habilitation and was later also appointed professor . Before 1812 he was a teacher at a school in Berlin , then a senior teacher at the unified secondary school in Halle .

In 1812 Schmieder moved to Kassel and became, among other things, director of the community school and school inspector of Kassel.

Karl Schmieder gained significant importance through his main work "History of Alchemy ", published in 1832 , a widely read classic on the history of gold transmutation . In the book it is also clear that he himself believed in the transmutation of base metals into noble metals in alchemy. Schmieder also wrote numerous essays and books on mineralogy and numismatics , as well as literary works and translations from ancient Greek. In addition, there are contributions from him in the General Encyclopedia of Sciences and Arts by Erf and Gruber.

He belonged to the Masonic lodges, Zu den three Swords in Halle and To perfect harmony and friendship in Kassel.
