Jörg Huffschmid

Jörg Huffschmid (born February 19, 1940 in Cologne ; † December 5, 2009 in Bremen ) was a German economist . Until 2005 he headed the Institute for European Economy, Economic and Social Policy at the University of Bremen and was a founding member of the Alternative Economic Policy working group (memorandum group).

Career

From 1959 to 1963 Huffschmid studied philosophy and economics in Freiburg im Breisgau , Paris and at the Free University of Berlin , which finally awarded him the academic degree of Diplom-Volkswirt . In 1967 he received his doctorate on "The position of data as a method problem in the social sciences" for a doctorate in economic and social sciences (Dr. rer. Pol.) In 1973 the University of Bremen appointed him Professor of the Chair of Political Economy and Economic Policy . Together with others, he founded the Alternative Economic Policy working group, also known as the “Memorandum Group” in 1975 . From 1983 to 1989 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the DKP- affiliated Institute for Marxist Studies and Research (IMSF) . From 1984 he was a member of the board of the DKP for several years. In 1995 he was a founding member of the European Economists for an Alternative Economic Policy in Europe . Huffschmid had retired on March 1, 2005 .

In 2000 Huffschmid was a member of the Enquête Commission of the German Bundestag “Globalization of the World Economy - Challenges and Answers”. He was co-editor of the political-scientific monthly magazine Blätter for German and international politics . Huffschmid sat on the advisory boards of Science and Peace , the Bremen Foundation for Armaments Conversion , Z. Zeitschrift Marxistische Renewal and the globalization-critical network Attac .

Huffschmid was co-author of the annual memoranda of the Working Group Alternative Economic Policy . Several of his students were instrumental in setting up Attac in Germany. One of them is the Green MEP Sven Giegold .

The Jörg Huffschmid Prize was awarded for the first time in 2011. In thought of Jörg Huffschmid's scientific work and socio-political commitment, the Alternative Economic Policy working group, attac and attac's scientific advisory board, the EuroMemo Group and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation have awarded this prize. The first prize winner was Nicola Liebert. The next prize was awarded in 2013 and went to Ingo Stützle and Florian Butollo. In 2017 Etienne Schneider and Ulaş Şener are the winners. The 2019 winners are Felix Gnisa and Gábor Scheiring.
