Gerald
Gerald is a male given name of Germanic origin. The female form is Geraldine .
Origin and meaning
When Gerald is a - possibly Romanesque influenced - variation of the name Gerold . The name originally to be applied as Gerwald is composed of Old High German or Old Saxon ger “Speer” (from Proto-European * gaizaz ; cf. the Scandinavian name Geir ) and Ahd. Waltan or Old Saxon Waldan “ walten , rule”. Its meaning can therefore be set as "the one who wields the spear".
It is believed that the personal name came to the British Isles through the Normans , where it was able to enjoy lasting popularity, especially in Ireland. In Germany, and especially in southern Germany, the name was widely used as a saint name during the Middle Ages and has survived into modern times. The short form of Gerald - and other names with Ger- as the first link - is Gerry .
