Fitzgerald

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fitzgerald (or in traditional spelling FitzGerald , Irish Mac Gearailt ) is a patronymically formed Irish family name meaning "son of Gerald ". The addition "Fitz" is derived from the Norman / French filz / fils , which is derived from the Latin filius "son". It corresponds to the Old Norse son in the Norman tradition. It was added to the surnames of the master families of Norman descent and then illegitimate sons of England.
