Charles Patrick Fitzgerald

Charles Patrick Fitzgerald (* 1902 in London , England; † April 13, 1992 in Sydney , Australia) was Professor of East Asian History and wrote important works on the history of China .

Life

Fitzgerald grew up in England. Since 1923 he lived in China; from 1946 to 1950 he worked there for the British Council . Then he moved to Australia and was, although he had no academic degree , from 1951 until his retirement in 1967 Professor of East Asian History at the Australian National University in Canberra. In 1968 the university awarded him an honorary doctorate. From its inception in 1969, he was a member of the Australian Academy of Humanities .

  • China. From prehistory to the 19th century, Munich 1967 (a volume from Kindler's cultural history , later outside of that series also under the title The Chinese. The People of Opposites appeared)
