Susan Fitzgerald
Susan Fitzgerald (* May 28, 1949 in Leicester , England as Susan Mary Theresa FitzGerald , † September 9, 2013 in Dublin ) was an Irish actress with character roles in film, television and theater. She became internationally known for her roles in the cinema productions A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , The Kiss of the Snake , My Mother's Ashes or Two Weddings and a Fall of Love .
Life
Susan Fitzgerald was born in Leicester, England, in 1949, one of six children, after her family moved there from Dublin for professional reasons when her father qualified for a doctorate. The family later returned to the Irish capital. Susan discovered her love for the theater early on. When she was nine years old, she took part in a school performance for the first time. After school, she studied at Trinity College , Dublin, before embarking on her artistic career and long association with the Gate Theater in the 1970s .
She played leading roles in plays by Shakespeare , Oscar Wilde , Noël Coward , Henrik Ibsen , Samuel Beckett , Alan Ayckbourn , Tennessee Williams , George William Russell , Frank McGuinness and Brian Friel , as well as in theater adaptations based on novels by Charles Dickens and Jane Austen .
In 1977 she finally made her screen debut in British cinema. In the film adaptation of the James Joyce novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by director Joseph Strick , she embodied the character of Emma in a supporting role. A year later, Susan Fitzgerald also turned to British television.
She was seen in the cinema in 1997 in director Philippe Rousselot's The Snake Kiss in the cast of Ewan McGregor , Greta Scacchi , Pete Postlethwaite and Richard E. Grant . In 1999 she starred in Alan Parker's award-winning drama My Mother's Ashes . In 2009 she had her last screen appearance in Stephen Burke's Irish comedy Two Weddings and a Fall of Love .
In her career as an actress, she also took part in a variety of other projects in Ireland, including appearing in various plays at the Olympia Theater.
Susan Fitzgerald was the wife of director Michael Colgan, the Artistic Director of the Gate Theater. The couple had three children: Sarah, Sophie and Richard. Susan Fitzgerald's relatives include playwright Dennis Johnson and Oscar-nominated actress Geraldine Fitzgerald .
She died after a long illness on September 9, 2013 at the age of 64 in Dublin.
