Zygmunt Bocheński

Zygmunt Bocheński (born July 25, 1935 in Zakopane , † November 29, 2009 in Krakow ) was a Polish vertebrate paleontologist and ornithologist . He dealt specifically with fossil (and recent) birds.

life and work

His father Zbigniew Bocheński was an art historian. Bocheński studied at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków with a diploma in 1957 and a doctorate in 1961. He completed his habilitation there in 1974 and became a professor in 1983. He had been at the Institute for Systematics and Evolution of Animals at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków from 1959, was deputy head of the institute from 1979 to 1981 and head of vertebrate zoology in 1986/87. In 2006 he retired.

He published a catalog of fossil birds from Poland and the birds of the Younger Quaternary in Poland. In addition to Poland, he was also doing fieldwork in Egypt and Spain. Together with Teresa Tomek he worked on birds from the excavations of El Nabta in Egypt and with Teresa Tomek and Zbigniew M. Bocheński the birds from the excavations of the Oblazowa Cave in the Polish Carpathians.

He published on the breeding behavior of reed warblers , common thrushes and warblers and the birds of the Ojców National Park and the Babia Góra National Park .

He first described, among others, Zbigniew Bocheński, a hummingbird from the Eocene Eurotrochilus noniewiczi , whose fossils were found near Jasła in the Polish Carpathians.

1985 to 2007 he was editor of Acta Zoologica Cracoviensia. He was one of the founders of the ornithological department of the Polish Zoological Society and from 1974 to 1982 president of its section in Cracow. He received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

His son Zbigniew M. Bocheński (in contrast to him, abbreviated to ZM Bochenski, he himself is abbreviated to Z. Bochenski) is also a paleornithologist.
