François Besch (* 1963 in Esch an der Alzette ) is a Luxembourgish photographer , journalist and artist . He is considered a pioneer of art photography using smartphones .

Act

Besch lives and works in Bivingen , the birthplace of the American photographer with Luxembourgish roots Edward Steichen . The artist became internationally known for his Hipstamatic shots of well-known personalities, including other photographers such as Lucien Clergue and David Hamilton . In December 2013, the Luxembourg Post issued a series of five postage stamps that were made by Besch using the Hipstamatic application. In 2014 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , the Knight's Cross .

Awards

François Besch was awarded the eighth ' Monika von Boch Prize for Photography ' as a photographer for his artistic work with the iPhone in March 2017 .

Exhibitions

In 2011, he organized the first exhibition in Luxembourg (Terres Rouges Gallery, Esch an der Alzette ), in which all exhibits were created with the Hipstamatic application for iPhone . In the following year, the art collector , curator and gallery owner Marita Ruiter brought him to her gallery and showed his work together with those from u. a. Man Ray , Horst P. Horst and Anselm Kiefer , before she dedicated a solo exhibition to him as part of the European Month of Photography 2013. In the same year he realized the first hipstamatic exhibition “Multilingual Teens” in public space in Luxembourg City on behalf of the Luxembourg branch of the Berlitz language schools .
