Franz Leppmann

Franz Leppmann (born November 4, 1877 in Berlin , † 1948 in London ) was a German journalist and publicist .

Life

The son of the businessman Jakob Leppmann passed his Abitur in 1896 at the Luisenstädtisches Gymnasium Berlin . He first studied law at the Friedrichs-Wilhelm University in Berlin and Paris . In 1898 he changed subjects in Munich and began studying philosophy and philology . From 1899 he continued his studies in Berlin, where he in 1902 Erich Schmidt with a comparison of different versions of Gottfried Keller's Green Henry doctorate .

After a short teaching activity, Leppmann became a feature writer at Ullstein-Verlag and a theater critic for the Vossische Zeitung . He published Thomas Mann's first biography in 1916 . During the Weimar Republic , he also worked as a translator and editor for the Ullstein publishing house and as the editor in charge of the Propylaen publishing house . He was also a lecturer at the Lessing University in Berlin and a radio speaker. In 1933 Leppmann, who was baptized as a Protestant, had to give up his position due to his Jewish origins. He and his second wife Ida Orloff followed their son Wolfgang Leppmann to Florence and taught there until 1938 at the rural school home in Florence . After separating from his wife, father and son Leppmann fled to London in 1938 from further persecution . Here Leppman worked for the radio, as an essayist, translator and literary historian.
