The Lessing University of Berlin is a private educational institution in Berlin-Dahlem named after the German poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing . It is supported by a sponsoring association and was publicly funded until 2001, since then it has been financed exclusively privately.

The Lessing University is not a university in the usual sense, but an institution for adult and further education that is organizationally comparable to an adult education center or an educational association . It does not offer courses of study with enrollment , admission requirements or degrees , but rather individual events for which the participants register individually and pay a fee. In addition to events with several evening appointments, this also includes individual lectures and one-day or multi-day study trips . The events take place in the rooms of the Adult Education Center Steglitz-Zehlendorf, which is also given as the contact address .

The rector is the political scientist Bernd Guggenberger , the prorector the philosopher Günther Bien (as of February 2018). Political scientist Norbert Kapferer († 2018) was one of the student deans .

One of the first lecturers was the author and women's rights activist Helene Stöcker , who taught there from 1901 to 1905.

From 1914 to 1933 the psychologist Ludwig Lewin (1887–1967) was its director, who expanded the university after the end of the First World War : In 1920 a Collegium Musicum was created, in 1927 business courses were offered, in 1928 the woman’s university established the department for physical education and sport followed in 1929 and the Central Institute for Scientific Graphology in 1930. After power was handed over to the National Socialists in 1933, the school was closed, Lewin and his wife emigrated to the USA. In 1964 the Lewins returned to Berlin and from 1965 rebuilt the university under the patronage of the Governing Mayor Willy Brandt .

During the Weimar Republic , this educational institution, which had reached a university level, was one of the intellectual and cultural centers in Germany. Until 1933, the following lectured at the university:
