Gerald FitzGerald , called the Young (* 1487 in Ireland ; † September 2, 1534 in the Tower of London ) also known under the name Gearóid Óg , was the 9th Earl of Kildare .

Gerald FitzGerald was a son of Gerald FitzGerald, 8th Earl of Kildare , and his wife Alison Eustace. In 1503 he married Elizabeth Zouche (1493-1517), daughter of Sir John Zouche. They had a son together:

  • Thomas (1513-1537), 10th Earl of Kildare.

In his second marriage, FitzGerald was with Lady Elizabeth (approx. 1500 - approx. 1540), a daughter of Thomas Gray, 1st Marquess of Dorset . From this marriage there were three other children:

  • Gerald (1525-1585), 11th Earl of Kildare
  • Elizabeth (1528–1589 / 90),

  2. ⚭ 1552 Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln

Life

Gilbert was educated in England, where he was held hostage for his father. After regaining royal favor, Gerald was able to return to Ireland in 1504 and was appointed Lord High Treasurer .

In 1513 he inherited his father and took over both County Kildare and the status of Lord Deputy (Viceroy) of Ireland. Cardinal Wolsey in particular tried to oust him; FitzGerald was temporarily imprisoned in the Tower. Another enemy arose in the Butler of Ormonde family, who used their relationship with the new Queen Anne Boleyn to arrest Gerald again in the Tower, where he died on September 2, 1534.
