Rusty Fitzgerald (born October 4, 1972 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who has spent two seasons each in the National Hockey League and the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Rusty Fitzgerald first played in the high school championship of the state of Minnesota for the William M. Kelly High School and the Duluth East Greyhounds . In the 1991 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round in 38th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins . Then Fitzgerald studied at the University of Minnesota Duluth and was also active for the local ice hockey team.
Since he first graduated, the striker didn't make his professional debut until 1995, at the age of 23. He played shortly before the end of the regular season in both the International Hockey League for the Cleveland Lumberjacks , and in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins and was also active in the playoffs . The next year Fitzgerald went on the ice for these two teams. In preparation for the 1996/97 season, the left shooter injured his knee and was out for the entire season. He also had to sit out most of the next season and only played 34 games for the Lumberjacks in the IHL again in 1998. The 1998/99 season then Fitzgerald spent with the Quad City Mallards in the United Hockey League . Here he was active until the end of 1999 and then moved to the Manitoba Moose in the IHL in 2000 .
For the 2001/02 season the striker signed with the Iserlohn Roosters from the German Ice Hockey League . Here he set the club record valid until 2008 with 27 goals scored. Since the Roosters could not qualify for the playoffs, he completed a few more games in the West Coast Hockey League in the spring of 2002 . For the 2002/03 season Fitzgerald moved to the Frankfurt Lions . Here he was struggling with injury problems again and only played 17 games. Therefore, the American had to end his career afterwards.
