Michael Fitzgerald (medical doctor)
Michael Fitzgerald (born October 7, 1946 ) is an Irish psychiatrist and university professor.
Life
Michael Fitzgerald studied at the Chicago Medical School in the USA. In 1970 he worked as a junior doctor at St. Patrick's Hospital in Dublin . Employment at Bethlehem Royal and Maudsley Hospital London and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases followed . In 1979 he became senior registrar at Kings's College Hospital London . He also worked as a specialist in psychiatry at the National Children's Hospital Dublin . In 1996 he was appointed Ireland's first professor of child psychiatry at Trinity College , Dublin. He is a research advisor to the Irish Society for Autism .
In his career, Fitzgerald has diagnosed more than 1,900 people with autism or Asperger's syndrome . As an author or co-author, he has published 16 books. He achieved further notoriety with his research into the connection between autism and creativity , which he published in his books Genesis of Artistic Creativity - Asperger's Syndrome and the Arts and Autism and Creativity . Simon Baron-Cohen called the latter book the best he would have read on autism.
