Patrik Fitzgerald (born March 19, 1956 in Stratford , London ) is an English singer and punk poet.

Life

After briefly appearing as an actor and unsuccessfully attempting to become a member of Mick Jones' band London SS , he began to set his poems to music with the rise of the punk movement in 1977. He released his first EPs under Small Wonder Records . The first of these, Safety-Pin Stuck In My Heart, probably contains his most famous piece today. The British music press tried for a while to build him up as Bob Dylan des Punk, but his commercial success remained rather modest. After all, he toured with The Jam in 1977 and received a recording deal from Polydor in 1978 .

The first LP Grubby Stories was a little more elaborately produced than the previous EPs, but still consisted essentially of short songs played to the acoustic guitar with strongly ironic ("I don't want to be your hero") and socially critical songs ( Adopted Girl ). On one of the pieces, Make it Safe , he announced the sell-out and the end of punk at a time when it was being perceived as a phenomenon in Germany. ("Punk ain't gonna change the world." - "They turn it into a joke, anything that threatens them".)

The LP Tunesian Twist , released in 1986, was radically different from earlier works in terms of musical style. With drums, keyboards and even horns, he was apparently trying to appeal to a wider audience. In essence, however, the pieces remained an expression of an outsider in the music industry who stood beside all currents.

In 1988 he moved to France, where he worked as a waiter. He now lives in New Zealand.

In 1994 a compilation CD was released which contains a selection from his work, albeit with an emphasis on the early years, and introduces him as a master of the short, melodic punk song.
