from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerold von Jerusalem ( Gerold von Flanders or Gerald von Lausanne ; French mostly Giraud ; † September 7, 1239 ) was abbot of Molesme Abbey and then Cluny Abbey , and from 1225 to 1238 Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem .

Life

From 1208 to 1215 Gerold was abbot of Molesme (Molême) and was then elected abbot by the monks of Cluny. In this position he was involved in the War of Succession for Champagne . He was always on the road on behalf of the papal. For example, in 1215 he raised and administered the crusade funds and passed them on to the treasurer of the Knights Templar in Paris. In 1220 Gerold became Bishop of Valence through a personal exchange . From 1225 he was Patriarch of Jerusalem, experienced as such the crusade of Frederick II and was very critical of it.

He probably died on September 7, 1239.
