William of Savoy (* around 1201 ; † November 1, 1239 ) was Bishop of Valence from 1224 and Bishop of Liège from 1238 until his death .

Life

Wilhelm was the son of Count Thomas I of Savoy and Beatrix of Geneva. He was dean in Vienne and was elected Bishop of Valence in 1224. In 1235 he became Elect of Lyon , but was not confirmed by the Pope. In 1237 he went to England to the court of Henry III. who was married to his niece Eleanor . Heinrich tried to get him the bishopric of Winchester , but failed because of resistance from the local clergy. In 1238 he was elected Bishop of Liège. He traveled to Emperor Friedrich II in Brescia , who refused him the regalia . Thereupon Wilhelm went to Rome to Pope Gregory IX. who confirmed him as Bishop of Liege. On the way back he died in Viterbo , presumably he was poisoned. Wilhelm was buried in the Abbey of Hautecombe .
