Gerald "Jerry" Valentine (born September 14, 1914 in Chicago ; † 1983 ) was an American jazz trombonist , composer and arranger .

Live and act

Valentine studied composition; as a trombonist he was self-taught. In the early 1940s he worked for Earl Hines , for whom he wrote many arrangements such as "Second Balcony Jump". In Chicago he also worked with Dallas Bartley, King Kolax and arranged for music shows at Club DeLisa in 1943 . Together with Billy Eckstine he left the Hines band in 1944 to co-found the singer's new big band, Billy Eckstine and His Orchestra , of which he was a member until it was dissolved in early 1947. For the Eckstine Big Band he composed “Blowin 'the Blues Away”, “Midriff” and “Must I Cry Again” (with Lincoln Chase and Lloyd Pemberton). He also arranged the pop hits "A Cottage for Sale" and "Prisoner of Love" for the singer; Sarah Vaughan's first recording "I'll Wait and Pray" was a Valentine's arrangement.

In 1947 he was involved in the recording of Wynonie Harris . In 1949 he worked as arranger for Buddy DeFranco , in 1954 for Gene Ammons and in 1958/59 for The Prestige Blues Swingers (album Outskirts of Town ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 26 recording sessions between 1940 and 1959.

In the 1950s he was an A&R for National Records . In later years he wrote arrangements for Art Farmer , Coleman Hawkins and Pepper Adams .

According to Ira Gitler , Valentine showed a sensitivity for new idioms by including bebop figures and some previously unfamiliar harmonies in his generally swing and blues-oriented style.
