Gerald Wolf (born February 22, 1943 in Limbach ) is a German neurobiologist .

Professional path

From 1962 to 1967 Wolf studied biology at the University of Leipzig (diploma) and medicine at the same time (until 1969). Until 1978 he was a research assistant at the Biosciences Section at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1970 as a student of Günther Sterba in the field of neuroendocrinology . In 1979 he completed his habilitation on the subject of hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal system and neurophysins , in the same year received a lectureship in the field of "Biology for Physicians" at the Biological Institute of the Medical Academy Magdeburg (MAM) and was appointed head of the chair of the same name. He was appointed full professor of biology in 1981. In 1985, Wolf became director of the institute, and in 1992 he was appointed to the C4 professorship for "Medical Neurobiology" and was confirmed as director of the institute for biology, which started with the founding of the Otto- von Guericke University Magdeburg was renamed "Institute for Medical Neurobiology" of the Medical Faculty.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Wolf took on various functions in academic self-administration (including as Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty and later as Vice Rector for Research at the University). He is a member of the board of trustees of the Humanist Association Berlin-Brandenburg .

Wolf publishes as a guest author on the Axis of the Good .

Scientific work

The topics he researched include neuropeptides in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland , the metabolism of neurotransmitters , neurodegenerative diseases and nitric oxide as a signal in the body. His research includes around 260 original papers and book chapters as well as a number of books. Wolf is a member of numerous scientific societies.

Popular science

Gerald Wolf wrote a number of popular science books on biological subjects and neurophilosophical writings. In his two science novels "The Brain God" and "Believe me, I do not exist" , he pursues the current question in the philosophical dispute between representatives of scientism and creationism : "Is God ultimately just a product of human nerve cells?" In his latest science novel " The love powder “ is about the brain hormone oxytocin . On television Gerald Wolf gives answers to questions about brain research and its philosophical aspects ( MDR at 11 , previously MDR at twelve , series GeistReich ).
