Order of the Nine Gems

The Order of the Nine Gems (full name: The very old and auspicious Order of the Nine Gems ; Thai เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ อันเป็น โบราณ มงคล นพ รัตน ราช ว รา ภรณ์Khrueangratcha Itsariyaphon Anpen Boran Mongkhon Nopa Rattanarat Woraphon , English The Ancient and Auspicious Order of the Nine Gems ), is a high royal Thai order .

history

The custom of paying tribute to the king at the coronation before the royal insignia is presented with a chain to be worn around the belly led to the long name of the order. The chain was set with a diamond , ruby , emerald , topaz , carbuncle , sapphire , pearl , garnet and a so-called sun eye . These nine gemstones inspired King Mongkut (Rama IV.) In 1851 to establish an order with these decorations, supplemented by a breast star . King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) finally added a pendant , sash and ring . According to the statutes as amended on December 29, 1869 , the award is only possible in nine cases.

An award is reserved for the king, this she wears on a necklace ( Collane ). The other eight medals are awarded without a chain. Here are the royal family and only the highest officials in the rank of deserving. The condition is to be a Buddhist . The only exception so far is Napoleon III. , Emperor of the French , who was awarded the order in 1864 by King Mongkut (Rama IV) .

The medal is usually given to members of the royal family ( Chakri dynasty ). Only five bearers in the history of the order were not noble: the (former) heads of government Plaek Phibunsongkhram (awarded in 1941), Pridi Phanomyong (1945), Sarit Thanarat (1959), Prem Tinsulanonda (1988) and Sanya Dharmasakti (1996). There are currently only four living bearers of the order: King Maha Vajiralongkorn , his mother Sirikit and his two sisters Sirindhorn and Chulabhorn .

The decoration consists of a single class (knight) and is worn in the following designs:

  • Pendant of the Order of the Nine Gemstones , hanging on a yellow sash, decorated with blue, red and green side stripes, to be worn over the right shoulder to the left hip
  • Star of the Order of the Nine Gems , to be worn on the left chest
  • golden ring of the Order of the Nine Gems , worn by men on the right index finger
  • Strap buckle of the Order of the Nine Endestones , to be worn on the uniform or on the service suit

The order decoration consists essentially of a golden breast star with eight clover-leaf-like star points. The nine gemstones are set on the front . The back has the sunbeam in the middle (Unalome). Above all is the Siamese royal crown with abundant diamonds. The ring for the ribbon is on the crown .

The medal bearer is entitled to a น.ร. to lead behind the name.
