Rico Bonath (born December 5, 1983 in Berlin ) is a German handball player . The left-handed player played on the right back position in the 3rd division for the Wilhelmshaven HV . For professional reasons, Bonath has been without a contract since July 2012.

Career

At the age of eight, Rico Bonath began playing handball at TBV Lemgo .

At the age of 18 he received his first professional contract in Lemgo in 2002 and played for the first and second team under coach Volker Mudrow . In the very first season he came to several Bundesliga and European Cup appearances; The highlight of the season was winning the German championship in summer 2003.

For the next two years, Bonath played with double rights in Lemgo and for HSG Augustdorf / Hövelhof in the 2nd division. In summer 2004 he reached the 5th place with the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr (trained by today's national coach Martin Heuberger ) at the military world championships in Riga. In the 2004/05 season he also played for Lemgo in the EHF Champions League (up to the quarter-finals). In May 2005 Bonath suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee in the last game for Augustdorf in Berlin.

Despite the injury, he moved to Bundesliga club Wilhelmshavener HV (coach Michael Biegler ); after almost 9 months of rehab he was able to play again in January 2006; In March 2006, the same cruciate ligament tore again at the game in Flensburg. Again 9 months of rehab followed until December 2006. He finished the 2006/07 season with the WHV in 11th place. In the following year the WHV was less successful, in January 2008 Biegler was dismissed; in the second half of the season "Pitti" Petersen and Andrzey Staszewski trained the team, but at the end of the season the WHV had to relegate to the 2nd handball league.

From 2008 to 2010 Bonath played at Ahlener SG under coach Jens Pfänder . In February 2009, he suffered a third cruciate ligament tear in the home game against Bernburg, this time in his left knee. So it was called sweating again in rehab until October 2009.

After the merger of Ahlen and ASV Hamm to form HSG Ahlen-Hamm , Bonath moved to the 3rd division for SVH Kassel in 2010 . The year was rather disappointing in terms of sport, Kassel was relegated.

In the summer of 2011 he took the opportunity to return to the Wilhelmshaven AGM and to the home of his partner.
