Nils Ole Oermann

Nils Ole Oermann (* 1973 in Bielefeld ) is a German university professor and business ethicist.

In 2009 he was appointed institute director to the professorship for ethics with a focus on sustainability and sustainable business at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg . In addition, from 2010 to 2012 he served, among other things, as Vice President of his university. Since 2010 he has also been a visiting professor for ethics with a focus on business ethics at the University of St. Gallen . From 2007 to 2018, Oermann and Rolf Schieder headed the "Program on Religion, Politics and Economics" at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Oermann has also been an Associate Faculty Member at Oxford University since July 2018 .

Life

From 1992 to 1995 Oermann studied Protestant theology, law, history and philosophy at the Universities of Leipzig and Münster . In 1998 he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) In Modern History as a Rhodes Scholar (Germany & Christ Church 1996) at Oxford University with a thesis on colonial history. In 1999 the Dr. theol. in Germany with a dissertation on state church law.

From 1999 to 2001 Oermann worked as a management consultant for the Boston Consulting Group in New Zealand and Australia . In 2003, she completed her Masters in Public Administration (MPA) at Harvard University , with a focus on economics , international relations and ethics. In 2004 he passed the first state examination in law at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg .

Oermann's habilitation thesis on business ethics ("Earning money properly? Protestant business ethics under the conditions of global markets", Gütersloh 2007), which was awarded by the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation and the Hanns Lilje Foundation Prize, was supervised by his academic teacher Prof. Richard Schröder . According to the Handelsblatt , Oermann is one of the “most prominent German business ethicists”.

Before and in addition to his work as a university lecturer, Oermann was and is active in political and economic advice, from 2002 to 2018 primarily for Wolfgang Schäuble .

From 2002 to 2004 Oermann worked in the German Bundestag's office a. a. in the field of foreign and European policy. From 2004 to 2007 he was the personal advisor to Federal President Horst Köhler , whom he also works to today. From 2007 to 2009 he established for Wolfgang Schäuble in the Federal Ministry of the Interior as a co-designer a. a. the German Islam Conference . Oermann was ordained as a Protestant pastor in 2006 and has been an active pastor in his home community Schäplitz / Altmark since 2012 . He is a member of the board of trustees of the International Martin Luther Foundation . In 2013, Oermann was appointed National Secretary for Germany by the Rhodes Foundation , Oxford . He has been managing the Rhodes Scholarship for German nationals since 2013 .
