Faouzi Chaouchi ( Arabic فوزي شاوشي, DMG Fauzī Šāwušī ; * December 5, 1984 in Bordj Menaïel ) is an Algerian football goalkeeper.

Career

JS Bordj Ménaïel

Faouzi Chaouchi began his career in 2003 at the lower class club JS Bordj Ménaïel , where his father also played as a goalkeeper . In the 2005/06 season he became captain and aroused the interest of larger clubs with just seven goals against in 32 games.

JS Kabylie

In 2006 he signed a three-year contract with top club JS Kabylie , and according to his own statement, the move made a “childhood dream come true”. The highlight of his three-year commitment was winning the Algerian championship in 2008. Chaouchi, nicknamed Canary by fans , scored a goal from the penalty spot against Cotonsport Garoua in the CAF Champions League .

After several lack of discipline since taking over the regular seat from Lounès Gaouaoui , he left the club in 2009 and moved to ES Sétif .

ES Sétif

In June 2009 he signed the contract. The ES Sétif brought him because of his outstanding performance, which he demonstrated at JS Kabylie .

In December 2009 he and his team won the North African Cup of Champions after defeating Espérance Tunis on penalties. Chaouchi was voted the tournament's best goalkeeper. On May 1, 2010, he also won the Algerian Cup in a 3-0 win over CA Batna in the final. This was the first cup win in twenty years, and the trophy was won for the seventh time. Algerian President Abd al-Aziz Bouteflika presented the trophy and medals for victory.

In 2009, several European teams showed interest in Chaouchi, such as Olympique Marseille . A few days after winning the Cup, he was asked in an interview if there were any offers from European clubs. He confirmed that his agents have received news that Olympique Marseille will send a scout to the international against Ireland on May 28th. He also confirmed that he was in contact with UC Le Mans and had also received an offer from an Arab club. However, he would not be interested in this and would like to move to Europe , if at all .

MC Alger

On July 19, 2011 Chaouchi moved to MC Alger and signed an annual contract there. After being sent off with a red card in his fifth league game against JSM Béjaïa , Chaouchi scored his first ever goal with a penalty in a 2-0 home win over MC El Eulma . On May 1, 2013, he and his team lost the Algerian Cup final against city rivals USM Algiers 0-1. As a result, the club's players refused to attend the award ceremony and clashes broke out in the stadium's catacombs. Identified as one of the main aggressors, Chaouchi was sentenced on May 8, 2013 to a two-year ban. The next day his contract with MC Algiers was terminated.

After the remaining period of the suspension was suspended at the end of April 2014, he signed a new two-year contract with MC Algiers on May 13, 2014 .

National team

On February 4, 2008 he was invited to the training camp of the national team in France because of his good performance at JS Kabylie by national coach Rabah Saâdane . On March 26, 2008, he made his international debut in the friendly against Congo DR when he came on for Lounès Gaouaoui in the second half .

On November 18, 2009 he played in the decisive World Cup qualifier for the 2010 World Cup against rivals Egypt from the start, since goalkeeper Gaouaoui was suspended. With Anthar Yahia's 1-0 winning goal , the Algerian national team qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time since 1986.

In December 2009, Chaouchi was appointed to the squad for the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola . Although he was actually only number two, he was number one at the Africa Cup due to his good performance against Egypt and the failure of Lounès Gaouaoui due to appendicitis. In the 0: 4 defeat in the semi-finals against Egypt, he saw the yellow-red card in the 87th minute. It was Algeria's third red card in the game after Rafik Halliche (38th minute) and Nadir Belhadj (70th) had been sent off. Although only sent off with yellow and red, he received a three-game ban because he had headbutted the referee in the previous game. After an initially unsuccessful objection, he would have been suspended for the first two World Cup games against England and Slovenia , but was still called up to the Algerian World Cup squad . Shortly before the start of the World Cup, the ban was finally lifted after Chaouchi had already served the ban in two qualifying games for the 2011 African Nations Cup . He was able to stand in goal in Algeria's first group game at the World Cup against Slovenia . Due to a mistake in the decisive goal conceded to 0: 1, he was involved in the defeat of his team. In the next game against England he was replaced by Raïs M'Bolhi , who was in goal in the last group game against the USA after a strong performance . After being eliminated from this tournament, Chaouchi did not play another international game.

After seven years of abstinence from the Algerian national team, he returned to a competitive game on November 10, 2017, in the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria (1-1).
