Wilfried Bauer (photographer)
Wilfried Bauer (born September 21, 1944 in Ingelheim am Rhein , † December 5, 2005 in Hamburg ) was a German photographer .
Life
Wilfried Bauer came into contact with photography at an early age through his parents, who owned a photo shop in Kandel . After an apprenticeship as a photographer with his father Jakob Bauer, he was assistant to photographer Robert Häusser in Mannheim from 1964 to 1968 . From 1969 he worked as a permanent photographer at ZEITmagazin of the Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit . From 1976 on he worked as a freelancer and was one of the most sought-after German reportage photographers. Many of his large photo series were published in the magazines GEO , Stern , FAZ-Magazin , Merian and Der Spiegel .
Wilfried Bauer committed suicide on December 5, 2005 at the age of 61. His archive is kept by the FC Gundlach Foundation in Hamburg.
“Wilfried Bauer was a sensitive loner, an individualist, in the language of his pictures. He didn't need sensations to create unforgettable and unusual pictures, especially of people, children or nature. Plants were living beings to him like humans.
[...] He loved the short focal lengths. The shorter the better. This enabled him to make physical contact with the people in front of the camera, he could touch them, they crawled into his camera. Every distance between them and the stranger, the observer, dissolved.
[…] It was not just the tragic death of Wilfried Bauer that casts a spotlight on the situation of an age group of photographers whose working conditions have changed dramatically with the advance of digital working methods in editorial offices and agencies. There are also hardly any long-term relationships and collaboration with editorial offices. "
