Heinrich August Schott

Heinrich August Schott (born December 5, 1780 in Leipzig , † December 29, 1835 in Jena ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Heinrich August was the son of Leipzig law professor August Friedrich Schott and his wife Margarethe Friederike Sophie Bahrdt († 1805). Initially, he was trained in his parents' home by private teachers, including his later brother-in-law Christian Gottlob Caspari (born November 27, 1764 in Riesa; † May 22, 1846 in Zschortau). From 1794 he attended the Nicolaischule in Leipzig . On March 2, 1795 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig , where he initially devoted himself to philosophical studies and then turned to theology. Here Christian Daniel Beck , Gottfried Hermann , Karl Friedrich Christian Wenck , Johann Friedrich Burscher , Johann Georg Rosenmüller , Gottlieb Immanuel Dindorf , Friedrich August Carus , Karl Adolph Caesar , Ernst Platner , Friedrich Gottlob Born and Karl August Gottlieb Keil became his teachers. In 1799 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy, was promoted to a doctorate in philosophy on February 27, 1800, and on September 12, 1801, he completed his habilitation at the philosophical faculty, where he gave lectures on rhetoric and homiletics.

In 1803 he obtained the baccalaureate in theology and in the same year became afternoon preacher and in 1804 early preacher at St. Paulinerkirche in Leipzig . On August 1, 1806 he was appointed associate professor of philosophy in Leipzig, in 1808 he moved to the theological faculty as an associate professor and received his doctorate in theology on December 6, 1809. On January 9, 1810, he advanced to the fourth full professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg , where his teaching assignment included the New Testament and he was ordained a preacher at the Wittenberg Castle Church on January 24 of that year . On August 1, 1812, he moved to the University of Jena as professor of the New Testament . He founded a homiletic seminary here, became a councilor in 1814 , a secret councilor in 1826 and received the civil service medal. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1830 .

Schott married in April 1810 with Julie Dorothea Caspari, the only daughter of the superintendent in Waldenburg Johann Gottlieb Caspari (born May 13, 1741 in Riesa; † February 16, 1826 in Chemnitz) and his wife Sophie Dorothea Weller, who was married on June 19, 1775 († January 17, 1821 in Waldenburg). There are five children from the marriage, all of whom were minors when Schott died. The oldest daughter Sophie Schott is known.
