Josef Schatz (born March 3, 1871 in Imst , Tyrol; † March 23, 1950 in Innsbruck ) was a Tyrolean old Germanist and dialect researcher and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.

Live and act

After attending grammar school in Brixen and Meran , Schatz studied German, classical philology and comparative linguistics at the University of Innsbruck from 1891 to 1896 , where he dealt in particular with Old High German and the Bavarian-Austrian dialects. In 1895 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate, in 1896 he passed the teaching examination and was initially a substitute at the State High School Innsbruck , then an intern at the Innsbruck University Library . His habilitation in 1897 was followed by a study visit to Leipzig , where Karl Brugmann  and Eduard Sievers were among his sponsors. From 1905 to 1911 Josef Schatz was an associate professor at the University of Lemberg , then a full professor there until 1912, before he was appointed professor for German language and literature at the University of Innsbruck in 1912. In 1917/18 he was dean of the philosophy faculty, 1922/23 rector of the university. In 1939 he was “relieved” of his duties as a full professor for reasons of age, as were all Austrian full professorships who had passed the age of 65 after the “ Anschluss ” to the “Third Reich” . He was one of the first dialectologists in the German-speaking area.

Although he saw himself primarily as an old Germanist, the focus of his research was in the field of dialects. The first basic structure of the whole Bavarian dialect area comes from him. He worked out the historical basis for dialect research in general, wrote an Old Bavarian grammar and himself considered his Old High German grammar from 1927 to be his main achievement. However, his two-volume dictionary of Tyrolean dialects , which he wrote from 1936 until his death in 1950 on the basis of surveys by his students in both the Austrian and the German-speaking part of Tyrol ( South Tyrol ), which became Italian after 1918, as well as including many old- , Central and New High German works, but he was no longer able to witness the printing.
