Franz Pirchner (agricultural scientist)

Franz Pirchner (born January 7, 1927 in Imst , Tyrol; † July 26, 2019 ) was an Austrian agricultural scientist and veterinarian . He was professor for animal breeding and domestic animal genetics at the agricultural faculty of the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan .

Live and act

After graduating from secondary school in Imst, he attended the commercial school and commercial academy in Innsbruck . It was followed by Reich Labor Service and service in the Wehrmacht. In 1945 Pirchner began studying medicine at the University of Innsbruck , which he followed from 1946 to 1950 with studying veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna and from 1950 to 1952 studying agriculture at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna . He finished his studies with the qualifications as a qualified veterinarian and a qualified agr.

After working at the Tyrolean Chamber of Agriculture (1952–1954), he completed additional studies with a focus on population genetics at Iowa State University under Jay Lush with a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D.

He then became research director at the Institute for Animal Husbandry in Rottenhaus near Wieselburg an der Erft (Lower Austria) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and geneticist in poultry farms in the USA and Germany.

In 1964, he accepted the call as full professor at the chair for animal breeding at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. He accepted the following appointment as full professor for animal breeding and domestic animal genetics at the Institute for Animal Sciences of the Agricultural Faculty of the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan in 1971, where he remained until his retirement in 1995.

The main focus of his work related to population and quantitative genetics in animal breeding as well as studies on the meat performance of Pinzgau cattle.

His main work: Population Genetics in Animal Breeding achieved several editions, he was involved in more than 200 scientific publications, in addition he supervised 60 doctoral students and 7 post- doctoral students .
