Jay Lush

Jay Laurence Lush (born January 3, 1896 in Shambaugh ( Iowa ), † May 22, 1982 ) was an American geneticist who is considered the founding father of scientific animal breeding research in the USA.

Live and act

He was the son of a farmer, studied at Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University ), graduated with an M. Sc in 1918 and received his PhD in genetics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1922 . He then became head of the Texas Agricultural Experimental Station and dealt with experiments on farm animals (beef cattle, dairy cattle, Rambouilett sheep, Angora goats). From 1930 to 1966 he was professor of animal breeding at Iowa State University in Ames and during this time also undertook study visits to Chicago and Copenhagen as well as long trips abroad to Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand.

In his work, Lush first examined the rules of inheritance in farm animals. He recognized that almost all the performance of these animals is influenced by many genes and environmental effects and, using statistical methods, developed new breeding methods that took into account the genetic principles and gave all animal breeding of that time a scientific basis. In recent years he has also dealt with the development of effective selection indices in order to gain further experience about the influence of the hereditary share and genetic correlations.

With the book "Animal breeding plans" this approach became known worldwide and led to students and postgraduates from many countries coming to Ames and graduating with an M. Sc or Doctor of Philosophy. Lush was a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a foreign member of the academies for science and agriculture in Sweden, Norway and Italy.
