Hermann Klotz (born June 11, 1850 in Imst , † March 6, 1932 in Dornbirn ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

The son of a master carpenter first trained with Franz Xaver Renn and Johann Grissemann in Imst, then he worked in the studio of the architect Karl Kaiser in Vienna . From 1875 he studied with Otto König  at the arts and crafts school of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Museum for Art and Industry in Vienna, where he was appointed head of the newly created carving department in 1879 and professor in 1884. His students included Franz Haider , Wolfgang Wallner , Max Domenig and Franz Barwig the Elder .

Klotz was particularly active as a wood carver , which, in contrast to his cousin, the stone sculptor Edmund Klotz , earned him the nickname "Holzklotz". He invented a new method of polychromy of wooden statues. He also created statues and reliefs in marble and bronze, including a life-size statue of the striding Empress Elisabeth for the Matthias Church in Budapest. This depiction was so well received that Emperor Franz Joseph I had small bisque replica copies made to give away to family members and guests of state.
