Otto König (sculptor)

Otto König (born January 28, 1838 in Meißen , † December 30, 1920 in Vienna ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Karl Wilhelm Otto König learned the profession of lithographer from 1854 to 1860 . He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden with Ernst Julius Hähnel and made numerous study trips, especially to Italy . In 1868 he was appointed professor at the Vienna School of Applied Arts , where Anton Brenek was his student. From 1869 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .

König contributed to the figural design of magnificent buildings on Vienna's Ringstrasse , especially the Vienna State Opera , the Burgtheater and the Museum of Art History . He created the relief heads of famous composers at the Vienna City Hall . Several grave monuments in Viennese cemeteries and portrait busts of members of the court also come from him. In 1874 he learned of the death of his wife and three children while on an art tour in Italy. He then created various lovely family groups and a memorial for his relatives. König was also known as the creator of portrait medallions . Occasionally sculptures by the artist can be found in auction shops.

Otto König was buried in the Hietzingen cemetery . In 1924 the Königgasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him. A cooperative residential building at Thaliastraße 86 bears the name Otto-König-Hof after him .
