From 1873 to 1875 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach . In 1875 he became a teacher of freehand drawing and fencing at the military lower secondary school in Sankt Pölten .

He married Laura Bertuch in 1884 and finished his military service. Then he went on study trips. His stay in Paris 1886–1890 in particular had a strong influence on him in terms of impressionism . In 1890 he moved to Znaim and came to Vienna in 1893 . Here he became a member of the Künstlerhaus in 1895 .

Hörmann died in Graz in 1895 on a trip to Italy . He was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (honorary graves, group 31A, row 2, grave no. 14). His grave monument was designed by Richard Karl Tautenhayn (born March 29, 1865 Vienna, † March 12, 1947 Vienna), who taught in Znojmo.

power

Theodor von Hörmann was a landscape painter and stylistically can be attributed to the Austrian mood impressionism. His landscapes always emerged from nature and were characterized by strong colors that were not very much appreciated by his contemporaries. They are often loosened up by figural staffage. Under the influence of Emil Jakob Schindler , he reluctantly changed his previous style shortly before his death, which began to earn him recognition. His importance was not fully appreciated until after his death. Hermann Bahr called him the first Secessionist .
