Eugen Bönsch

Eugen Bönsch (born May 1, 1897 in Groß Aupa , Austria-Hungary , † July 24, 1951 in Ehrwald , Austria ) was one of the most successful fighter pilots of the Austro-Hungarian aviation troops in the First World War .

Life

Bönsch joined the Austro-Hungarian Army as a volunteer in 1915 . After basic training, he was transferred to the aviation troops at his own request. Initially he was a mechanic at Flieger Ersatzkompanie 6 in Wiener Neustadt , until he was trained as a field pilot in 1917 at Flieger Ersatzkompanie 8 . Then he was assigned to the Flik 51J fighter pilot company at Haidenschaft on the Isonzo Front , with which he stayed until the end of the war. The unit's later commander was First Lieutenant Benno Fiala von Fernbrugg . Towards the end of the war, Bönsch's unit was increasingly used for infantry support. During theIn the Battle of Vittorio Veneto , he won several aerial victories despite the oppressive superiority of the Allied air forces.

In the interwar period, Bönsch ran an inn, the Wiesenbaude near the Riesengebirge ridge , and had Edmund Schneider manufacture the gliders Wiesenbaude 1 and Wiesenbaude 2 . During the Second World War he was drafted into the German Air Force as a captain and was in command of the Oschatz Air Base in Saxony.
