Iwate ( Japanese 岩手 郡 , - gun ) is a district in the Japanese prefecture of Iwate .

On January 1, 2008, the district covered an area of ​​1,586.87 km²; the estimated population was 95,522, the population density therefore about 60 inhabitants / km².

Three municipalities ( Machi / Chō ) have belonged to the district since 2014 : Shizukuishi ( 雫 石 町 , -chō ), Kuzumaki ( 葛 巻 町 , -machi ), Iwate ( 岩手 町 , -machi ). The population is falling.

Until the Meiji period

The district belonged under the ancient Ritsuryō administration, which was used as a geographical division of the country until the Meiji Restoration , to the province of Mutsu or Rikuchū ("Middle Mutsu"). The district originally included the northern part of what is now the urban area of Morioka , which was the castle town of the Principality of Morioka in the Edo period . During the restoration, Morioka Prefecture emerged from this, later renamed Iwate. When the districts were reactivated as a modern administrative unit to subdivide the prefectures in 1878/79, the previous Iwate district was divided into Kita (north) and Minami (south). With the introduction of the independent cities ( shi ) Morioka became independent from Minamiiwate on April 1, 1889.

  • February 1, 1955. Yanagawa Village is incorporated into Morioka City. Iwate County has three parishes and 16 villages.
  • April 1, 1955. The village of Ōta is incorporated into the city of Morioka. The villages of Nishiyama , Omyōjin and Gosho are attached to the township of Shizukuishi . This leaves three municipalities and twelve villages with Iwate County.
  • June 1, 1955. Makibori Village is annexed to Tamayama Village . Three municipalities and eleven villages remain in Iwate County.

  • September 1, 2005. The city ( Shi ) Hachimantai is created by merging the municipalities of Nishine and Ashiro and the village of Matsuo and becomes independent from Iwate County. This leaves three municipalities and two villages in the Iwate district.
