Tōno ( Japanese 遠 野 市 , - shi ) is a city in Iwate Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

location

The place is located in a narrow valley of the Kitakami mountain country , halfway between the coast and the fertile valley of the Kitakami River.

history

The area of today's city of Tōno has been settled for a long time and the place Tōno was later mainly important as a post office. Some houses, so-called Magariya , laid out at right angles in an L-shape and covered with straw , have been preserved and can be visited. They show the life of the farming families and their horses. In the most famous, the Chiba family's Magariya, 25 people lived with 20 horses.

The district community ( chō ) Tōno was only founded on December 1, 1954. The independent city ( shi ) Tōno was created on October 1, 2005 through the merger of the village ( mura ) Miyamori ( 宮 守 村 , -mura ) from the district of Kamihei with the municipality of Tōno. In the municipal elections carried out after the merger, Honda Toshiaki was confirmed as mayor in office.

Transport links

Road traffic

Tōno is usually within an hour's drive of most major points in Iwate. The National Road 396 leading to Morioka , the National Road 283 to Hanamaki in West and Kamaishi in the east, National Road 107 to Kitakami and the National Road 340 leading to Miyako in northeastern and after Ōfunato in the southwest. The national road 283, which leads through Tōno near the city center, is known to the locals as a bypass and has been sustainably expanded in recent years.

Tōno will also be connected to the Kamaishi Highway , which is currently under construction . In 2005, the construction of this highway, which should lead once from the coast to the connection to the Tohoku Expressway highway to Hanamaki, only reached Tōwa .

Rail transport

There are twelve train stations in the municipality, all belonging to the JR Kamaishi Line : Iwanebashi, Miyamori, Kashiwagidaira, Masuzawa, Arayamae, Iwate-Futsukamachi, Ayaori, Tōno, Aozaki, Iwate-Kamigō, Hirakura and Ashigase. In the city center, Tōno station is also the main bus station. Most of the pageants also take place on the street that runs past the train station.

education

There are three high schools in Tōno that are under the supervision of the Iwate Prefecture Education Authority. Tōno High School offers academic training, while Tōno Ryokuhō High School and Tōno Business Information Senior High School provide vocational training.

In 2005 there were nine municipal middle schools: Aozasa, Ayaori, Kamigō, Miyamori, Ōide, Otomo, Tōno, Tsuchibuchi, and Tsukimoushi.

In addition, there are twelve primary schools in the city: Aozasa, Ayaori, Kamigō, Masuzawa, Miyamori, Ōide, Otomo, Tassobe, Tōno, Tōno Kita (Tōno north), Tsuchibuchi and Tsukimoushi.

As the number of students continues to decline, some of these schools are likely to merge or close in the near future.

Since 1990, the secondary schools in Tōno have been running the School Partners Abroad school exchange program with the Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences (CSAS) in Chattanooga, Tennessee . At the end of the Japanese school year in March, a delegation of high school students from Tōno visits Chattanooga and the return visit of the CSAS students takes place in the summer. The city of Tōno supports this exchange and also organizes an exchange of middle school students with the CSAS and the Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts (CSLA), each a few weeks before the high school students.

Town twinning

Since 1984 Tōno has been twinned with Salerno in Italy. Such agreements also exist with three Japanese cities:

folklore

Tōno is known throughout Japan for the Tōno Monogatari ( Tales from Tōno ), which were written down in 1910 by Yanagita Kunio , who collected folk stories from the area. Today, the book is regarded as one of the most important works of research on Japanese folklore and was also the template for the 1982 film of the same name.

The water spirit kappa appears in some of these stories . A body of water in Tōno where these water spirits are said to live is known as Kappa-buchi . Kappa Maki, rolled sushi with green cucumber, is also derived from these water spirits.

The town's mascot is Karin-chan , a cute kappa holding a bellflower. She is usually shown walking in front of a Magariya - the post office building.
