Bachata is a style of music from the Dominican Republic and the associated dance .

history

Bachata originated in the early 1960s as a form of the Cuban or Caribbean bolero (not to be confused with the Spanish bolero ). At first, bachata was less intended for dancing, but was one of many styles of romantic Latin American trio guitar music, which, comparable to the Mexican mariachi tradition, was mainly used to entertain couples in love. In the decades that followed, Bachata musicians took on influences from other styles such as merengue , the tempo was increased and Bachata became more and more understood as dance music. From 2003 music and dance experienced a production boom in the entire Hispanic Caribbean region.

Bachata is typically played with two acoustic guitars, now also with electric guitars, plus bongos , bass and Güira . The style today is characterized by the characteristic, high and "droning" sound of the guitars, the rhythm (a 4/4 time , mostly based on the bass rhythm, dotted quarter - eighth - quarter - quarter ), and the lyrics, mostly sung by male singers and mostly about disappointed love. The tempo of Bachata pieces ranges from 115 to 160 bpm , mostly between 130 and 140 bpm.

The dance of the same name gained tremendous popularity in the 2000s. In the Dominican Republic, TV stations regularly hold bachata dance competitions. These television shows are very popular.

The sequence of steps is simple: the leg movement comes out of the knees with one leg placed next to the other. This “chassé” is danced continuously with merengue hip movements (one step per beat, i.e. on 1, 2, 3). In FIG. 4, the leg is lifted slightly by pulling the hips up on one side and / or at the same time dancing a double beat back and forth with the hips. Just like merengue and salsa , bachata is not a standardized dance; H. there are many variations and movements. Since bachata is usually danced very tightly and hip-hugging, it is one of the most erotic dances of all. The European version is danced with body spacing, and figures are also incorporated.

In the 1970s and 1980s, bachata was considered vulgar music of the lower classes of the population, was associated with prostitution, crime and poverty and, in contrast to salsa and merengue, was hardly played on the radio. That only changed around 1990, especially with Juan Luis Guerra , whose album Bachata Rosa won a Grammy in 1992 .

In Germany, the most successful bachata piece to date was the song Obsesión by the group Aventura , which also contains R&B and pop elements and was number 1 on the Media Control Singles Charts in September 2004 . Toby Love, who once belonged to Aventura, also mixed his bachata elements with R&B and crunk . This style of bachata music is also called bachata-urban and also contains influences from hip-hop and reggaeton .

In 2005 the International Dance Organization hosted the first Bachata World Championship in Bassano del Grappa ( Italy ). 52 mainly Italian couples performed show-oriented bachata with the help of the technique of Latin American tournament dances; World champions were Mirko Di Palma and Mazena Maj . Meanwhile the bachata has become a very popular tournament dance and the IDO regularly organizes world and European championships as well as world cups.
