Aventura (band)
Aventura ( Spanish was for "Adventure"), a bachata - band from New York . The band consisted of two American - Dominican and two Puerto-Rican- American musicians who tried to break away from the traditional themes and sounds of Bachata and to supplement them with their own content and modern American musical elements.
history
The band was founded in 1996 by the Bronx cousins Anthony Santos (also called "Roméo") and Henry Santos (alias "Hustlehard") and the two brothers Lenny ("Len Melodie") and Max Santos (alias "Max Agende") founded. All four band members have family roots in the Dominican Republic , but (with the exception of Henry Santos) were born and raised in the USA . The origins of the discovery process, go back to the year 1994: In Boston , where Latino community is a large Dominican, Anthony and Henry "Teenagers de la Bachata Los" have their first musical steps taken under the name and Bachata Trampa de amor published . Lenny and Max meanwhile called themselves “La Banda Suena” and played in the barrio on the street. In 1996 the four united in the group “Los Tinelles”, but a little later they renamed themselves “Aventura”. With their album Generation Next - La nueva generación de la Bachata (1997) they caused a sensation, especially in the Caribbean. The international breakthrough came with We Broke the Rules (2002). The title track Obsesión , which was released in a Spanish version and an English remix version, made a significant contribution to this . The song made it into the charts in many countries around the world, and in 2004 it even made it to number one in Switzerland , Italy and Spain . In 2004 there was a cover version of the boy group 3rd Wish with rap singer Baby Bash , whereupon the original from Aventura became so popular that it also reached the top of the charts in Germany .
In 2005 Baby Bash put the same cover version on again on the west coast of the USA together with the Mexican-American singer Frankie J , who in turn enriched it with a new Spanish cover version and a reggaetón mix version.
However, the members of Aventura are not exclusively committed to their own Bachata style. In 2004, Henry sang with Papi Sánchez in the song Me Dejó by the merengue group Amarfis y la Banda de Atakke . In 2005 Aventura could also be heard in collaboration with reggaetón artists - with Don Omar in the song Ella y yo on the album God's Project , with Tego Calderón in the song Envidia and with Wisin y Yandel in the song Noche de sexo . In 2007 they also showed a penchant for R&B in their song Los Infieles , which was underpinned by the Frankie J feature.
In February 2006, Aventura won two awards with God's Project at the famous Premio Lo Nuestro festival in Miami : in the categories “Grupo del Año” and “Tropical Tradicional Artista del Año”.
The band split up in 2011, Romeo Santos and Henry Santos started a solo career, while Lenny Santos and Max Santos formed the group Vena with Steve Styles.
Style and meaning
After Aventura were initially unsuccessful as teenagers de la bachata , they decided to “break the rules” (see CD title: “We broke the rules”) and break away from traditional bachata without giving up on them . The basic rhythm and the typical guitar accompaniment have remained, but now enriched with contemporary R&B , rock and pop sounds. From then on, the music was aimed in particular at the Latin American immigrants in the USA who had been living there in the second generation or longer. The texts are mostly Spanish , but mixed with many Anglicisms and Spanish slang . In terms of content, the texts sometimes differ greatly from the traditional bachata themes, although the basic melancholy mood, the pain of death and separation and the wickedness of women have been retained:
- In the song No lo perdona Dios (2002), a man weeps for his unborn child who had an abortion by his girlfriend.
- In Hermanita (2003) a brother celebrates the sad fate of his older sister who is beaten by her husband in marriage.
- The song Mi Niña Cambió (2003) is about a Latin American woman who goes abroad and is no longer the same when she returns home and is no longer understood by her ex-boyfriend. She is explicitly compared with the Colombian Shakira , the Mexican Thalía and the Puerto Rican-born Jennifer Lopez .
- In Amor de Madre (2002) is about a mother who, after the father of her child she left her baby alone must raise. Nobody else gives her support and eventually she finds herself forced to prostitute herself. Despite all the victims, the son becomes a delinquent and when he is finally taken away for a murder, the horrified mother dies. Only in prison does the son realize what his mother has done for him. He sees his situation as a (just?) “Punishment from God”.
- The song Lágrimas (2008) is a cover version of the song Lágrimas (German "tears") by the Mexican singer José José. It was recorded in typical Bachata style in memory of a good friend who had died in a serious car accident six years earlier. It was supposed to help a good friend of the band over his still lingering pain.
The classic, however, is still Obsesión (2002), which describes very finely and sympathetically how a young man climbs into a passionate love, although this is completely unfounded and is not reciprocated. This way of falling in love has a typically Latin American trait. Cousin Judy Santos sings the female part in the song. The well-known Dominican singing duo Monchy & Alexandra has also temporarily added the song to their repertoire .
