The historical origin of the kite festival is unknown. Legend has it that it goes back to the attempted rescue of the poet Qu Yuan , who lived during the Warring States Period (475–221 BC) and who drowned himself in the Miluo Jiang River because of injustice suffered . The very lively and colorful festival is a reminder of this event.
On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival is a dragon boat - Regatta organized. Dragon boat competitions have a long history in China, including Taiwan and Hong Kong , and have also been introduced in neighboring countries such as Japan and Vietnam . Dragon boat races are also held outside of Asia.
Zongzi ( 粽子 , zòngzǐ ) are also eaten at the Dragon Boat Festival . These are reminiscent of the rice dumplings that are said to have been thrown into the river so that the fish would not eat Qu Yuan's body. These zongzi are dumplings made from glutinous rice ( 糯米 , nuòmǐ ), wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves , with various fillings such as B. dates, sweet bean mash, ham, crab, peanuts and egg yolks.
