Qu Yuan ( Chinese 屈原 ; approx. 340 BC - 278 BC ) was a poet from the Warring States Period in the ancient Chinese Empire . He is considered China's first historically tangible poet personality.
He is said to have been an aristocratic member of the Chu royal family and held a senior post at the court of King Huai. Because of his political opinion, he is said to have been dismissed from office and is said to have drowned himself in the Miluo River after years of wandering in exile . The Chuci , the songs from Chu, are ascribed to him, along with Shi Jing, one of the earliest Chinese collections of poetry.
However, it can only be proven that Qu Yuan is the author of the Lisao ( 離騷 / 离骚 , Lí Sāo - "grief after separation, separation pain "), a long lamentation poem ( elegy ) that was written for later Chinese literature, especially the genre of Fu poems of the Han period , was exemplary. The Lisao represents an innovation in Chinese literature in terms of subject matter, form and metric .
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated annually in honor of Qu Yuan , as it is said that the inhabitants of the river bank of the Miluo, in which Qu Yuan is said to have drowned, got into their dragon boats to save him, but they did not succeed.
Since Qu Yuan had also dealt with astronomical topics in the poem Tianwen ( 天 問 / 天 问 , Tiān Wèn - "heavenly questions"), which was also ascribed to him - 日月 安 屬？ 列星 安 陳？ / 日月 安 属？ 列星安 陈？ - “How are the sun and moon connected? How are the constellations structured? ”- announced the National Space Agency of China on April 24th, 2020 that their interplanetary missions would all be named“ Tianwen ”followed by a serial number that will be assigned according to the start date.
