Smoke sauna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A smoke sauna ( fin. Savusauna , swed. Rökbastu , estn. Suitsusaun , eng . Smoke sauna ) is a sauna room that is conventionally fired with the help of a wood stove , but does not have a chimney or smoke pipe .

The sauna heater is filled and lit to heat it up. The resulting smoke gases flood the sauna room. Once the sauna room has reached its operating temperature, the ventilation flaps on the ceiling and in the roof are opened. The smoke escapes and the sauna is ready for use.

The sauna is completely sooty inside. The sauna guest takes a wooden mat from the sauna anteroom and places it on the sauna bench to protect against dirt.

Real Finnish smoke saunas are becoming increasingly rare due to burn-up and constantly changing legislation and can now almost only be viewed in museums. In Estonia, however, there are still smoke saunas, especially in the south-eastern part of the country. In November 2014, UNESCO put Estonia's smoke sauna on the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity .
