Podence is a village and former municipality in the Alto Trás-os-Montes region , in north-eastern Portugal .

The place is known nationwide for its traditional carnival parade at the end of winter. The Podence Carnival was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019 .

In 1447 the independent municipality Podence already existed here. Until 1832 it belonged to the district of Bragança . In the course of the changing administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution after 1821 and the following Miguelistenkrieg , their affiliation changed to belong to the circle of Macedo de Cavaleiros since 1878 .

With the municipal reform in 2013 , the municipality of Podence was dissolved and merged with Santa Combinha to form the new municipality of Podence e Santa Combinha .

In 2019, UNESCO added the Podence Carnival to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The place is known for the Podence Carnival . In 2019, the traditional carnival parade to drive out winter with its traditional colorful figures, the caretos , was recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage . The highlight of the carnival is the procession of the colorful masks and figures, the Entrudo Chocalheiro . With increasing awareness, the importance for tourism is growing , in 2018 around 20,000 visitors came to the village. The traditional cattle bells, the chocalhos, are also used. As Arte chocalheira, you have been on UNESCO's list of the intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of conservation since 2015 .

With the Quinta da Moagem João do Padre and the Quinta do Azibo there are two facilities of Turismo rural , which were established in old country estates. Nearby is the Albufeira da Azibo reservoir , which offers water sports and swimming, as well as the Praia da Ribeira river swimming pool . Signposted hiking trails lead through the municipality. The district's golf course, the Campo de Golfe de Macedo de Cavaleiros , is to be built in the municipality of Podence.

In addition to the elementary school built in 1984, the monuments also include various sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Podence (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação ), which u. a. Mannerist and Baroque altarpieces made of gilded woodwork ( Talha dourada ) contain.

Podence was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Macedo de Cavaleiros in the Bragança district . 250 inhabitants lived in it on an area of ​​250 km² (as of June 30, 2011).

The municipality consisted of two localities:

  • Azibeiro
  • Podence

In the course of the regional reform of September 29, 2013 , small area adjustments were made and the municipality of Podence was merged with the municipality of Santa Combinha to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Podence e Santa Combinha . Podence became the seat of the new municipality.
