Oshituthi shomagongo , the Marula Fruit Festival, ( English Marula Fruit Festival ) is a traditional festival of the Ovambo in Namibia . A fixed component is drinking a drink made from the fruit of the marula tree , the omagongo . Oshituthi shomagongo was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015 .

procedure

The festival is held for two to three days between March and April by Ovambo , who live in the Ohangwena , Oshikoto , Oshana and Omusati regions , to celebrate omagongo , a drink made from the fruits of the marula tree (elephant tree ). In the run-up, the men carve drinking vessels and collect small pumpkins and horns from cattle to pierce the fruit. At the same time, the women make baskets and clay pots that are used for the production of omagongo. Together with the children, they also collect the marula fruits, extract the juice from them and let them ferment for two to seven days . During this waiting period, poems are written, stories are told and knowledge is shared. The festival ends with singing and dancing together.

Intangible cultural heritage

At the 10th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Conservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2015, the tradition of Oshituthi shomagongo was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity . In summary it says:

“The Oshituthi Shomagongo Festival, passed down from generation to generation, celebrates the new cycle of plant production and the indigenous knowledge, skills, habits and oral traditions associated with it. With the broad involvement of all community members, each with different roles and responsibilities, it acts as a catalyst for cohesion and mutual respect between the Owambo and society in general. "

Oshituthi shomagongo is so far (as of 2019) the only intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO in Namibia.
