.

The sand drawings of Vanuatu are drawn with a finger in the sand or other loose soil pattern. Each pattern consists of only one continuous line. They arose from the need for communication between the over one hundred language-speaking residents of the state, which consists of 83 islands and archipelagos. The sand drawings can also serve as a reminder for oral stories or other information.

The Sand Drawings of Vanuatu were recognized by UNESCO in 2003 as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and in 2008 they were included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity .
